林紓曰，此書爲西人辨誣也。中人之習西學者，恆曰男子二十而外必自立，父母之力，不能筦約而拘攣之，兄弟各立門戶，不相恤也。是名社會主義，國因以強。然近年所見，家庭革命，逆子叛弟，接踵而起，國胡不強？是果眞奉西人之圭臬？亦兇頑之氣中於腑焦，用以自便其所爲，與西俗胡涉。此書爲比國貴族
其兄弟之難，傾家以救，至於破產無依，而其女能食貧居賤，曲意承順其父，視聽皆出於微渺中，孝之至也。父以友傳，女以孝傳，足爲人倫之鑑矣。命曰《孝友鏡》，亦以醒吾中國人，勿誣人而打妄語也。戊午二月二十日記。
