孟夏某日，予過黃龍浦，遊海上，觀三神山，經南北蔡。蔡之北者有大族婿者徐亨肅，予至其家，入其門則深庭別院，舉木天也。已乃覽其園池之勝，林木蔚蓊、水石聯絡，遂燕一堂，亨拜請曰：「堂未名，惟先生名。」予視堂陰五檜者，東軒老人之手植也，因名之曰「五檜堂。」又請曰：「堂既名，不可無誌，惟先生是措。」吾聞東軒老人好修潔，精於物理，加之該博文史，折節待海內士，必延飲五檜下。人問檜，則曰：「槐之三顯之必於天者，松之七隱之必於人者，柳之五又出天人隱顯之外，而以綱常之隆替為進退者。吾之進退未嘗必於天，亦未嘗必於人也。天之所以與吾者，果不可必乎脫五乘化。而畫五檜者鬱然於庭，使後之人見之，豈不求之於五檜七松之間耶？」是則予之命堂以五檜，或者東軒之人其有待余於冥數者。是檜也歷已百年，皆森聳奇崛，鬛而鱗，癭而輪，八臂九首而龍其身；節甚貞，氣甚清，掌月而珠擎，竅風而籟聲，饕雪而鐵撐，於以胚松柏之雲仍，而要歲寒之盟者乎！」言未畢，亨起謝曰：「是可與五檜寫神已，請書為記。」
