吳興趙生，名柯字仲則，又自號其讀書之室曰「則齋」。生以大父、府判公與予同仕於台，而其外舅、府推吳叔巽氏，又予之舉主也，遂以則齋求說於予。

予惟生之則，取義於《伐柯》之詩，中庸嘗取是詩，以證道之未嘗遠乎人也。夫求柯於木，其柯之則在此柯矣，人猶惑於彼此，睨而視之，猶以為遠也。治人之道，於此取之，未嘗遠也，以為遠者，何異睨之為惑者哉！聖如孔子，而曰「君子之道四，丘未能一焉」，故其治己也以求乎人者，反於吾身而已。生能以孔子之自謂未能者，不敢不勉，則其在是矣。《傳》曰「能為人則，不為人下」，君子之欲上乎民者，無是則，其可乎？故推是則於身也，則容止可觀、進退可度矣。推是則於民也，則畏而敬之，則而象之矣。故曰君子動而世為天下道，行而世為天下法，言而世為天下則。於乎！
