士大夫游戲翰墨，妙在意足，不求形似；雖然，捨形而意足亦難矣，此譜之所由作也。凡摹寫之非譜何所取則，及習久純熟，筆意融會，自能品入神品，則視譜猶筌蹄爾。予生僻好梅，每於溪橋、山驛、江路、野亭之間見其花，必裴回諦觀，有得於心，輒應之於手。方是時，物我兩忘，心境俱暢，孰能較譜之有無也哉？華光、逃禪、閑庵皆以此名世。嘗求譜而觀之，恍若親其口授指畫者，臨摹倣傚，昕夕靡怠。自是發枝點花、縱橫俯仰之法，向背開合之勢，歷歷與譜不少異。迨今四十餘年，漫浪湖海，未嘗釋於懷也。近於朋舊間見向所寫，嚎然不自滿，若非己作者。因知老來筆力非曩日比，識者每多許可，然不敢自足，第覺圖中之梅不啻千萬樹，酒酣氣雄，乘興一寫，必合程度，自非有譜，曷能臻是哉？於是悉取諸家手訣及舊藏畫卷，輒以己意刪繁補略，輯為一篇，目曰《
松齋梅譜
》，與好事者共之。夫梅之為花，擢孤芳於冰霜凌厲之餘，清姿雅意，不可名狀，予獨知之深、愛之篤、寫之不倦、至忘寢食焉。後有作者，安知不有如於秉心之苦、用意之廑者耶。不敢自田，乃鋟諸梓，以廣其傳，因述梗概冠於卷首云。會稽吳太素序。
