雲間呂生恂，名其新辟書室曰「漱芳」，取陸士衡語也，而有請於余曰：「吳俗嗜好尚權利，次貨殖婦女狗馬及方伎服食之秘也。恂賴大人蔭，雅知有義方，又賴先生教，顓習在《六藝》，時時能伸筆引舌漱其餘芳，足以自腴，蓋不知俗有權利貨殖婦女狗馬服食之秘之嗜已。願先生有以志諸室以儆。」予入吳，雅有喜呂氏父之善教其子也；又喜生之嗜好異於庸眾人，而善承其教也。而芳則難言也，何也？芳者大道之英、至治之馨也。世之泰，其芳在天下；世之否，其芳在《六藝》，天下之得之者鮮矣。離騷子嘗思得之，曰「芳菲芳而彌章」，至於悼時不得，則曰「哀眾芳之蕪穢」，其所以自呾於萬三千言者，則亦徒得諸齒吻之膏、觚櫝之馥而已耳，其能沾溉全楚之國哉？然其芳不溉全楚，而溉於天下後世也遠矣！故得其芳者嚼然泥而不滓，與日月爭光焉可也。嘻！《騷》之芳且爾，況聖人《六藝》之芳乎？陸氏子服膺儒術者著文《三百篇》，蓋亦有志於芳矣而實未嘗得之。使其得也，其能去舊鄉好新國，甘即戎服敗河橋，以遺華亭老鶴不勝之怨哉？方今聖天子思至治之馨，表章《六籍》以取士，士有不在《六藝》科者，不得奸時以進。生於《六藝》，能漱其芳之所獨得，異於陸氏子也，而又遭逢盛時，以大科進焉，則其芳也肯為《離騷》乎？《離騷》不為也，又肯為陸氏子乎？生勉之。父師之望生，生之自期以答父師望者，不在是乎？勿徒曰漱芳者自腴而已也、異俗之嗜而已也！
