予入淞，首慕顧野王，讀書堆者在亭林蒼翠間，未果往也。上海釋慧自稱野王氏後，介其師去東老人來請曰：「居之左個辟室，蓄古今書數千百卷，貽其嗣達、妙，襲名於讀書堆，敢丐一言以記。」記未及，今年予遊鶴沙，順流下黃龍江，抵滄海觀濤，泊舟古精藍下，主僧出肅客，乃慧也，見其二子即妙、達也。夜分張燈敘舊話，遂為援筆誌書堆。

夫書之能藏者不難，能讀者難。能讀者不難，能用者難也。書藏而不讀，與無等；書讀而不用，與不讀等。張茂先藏書至卅乘，而茂不善厥終，李讚華載書數萬卷，亦無救於僇身，非有書而不善讀、讀而不善用者與？代之衣冠家有積書如秘府，至再世三世懵與書隔，甚至售為聲伎資。吁，可悼也已！若慧之書堆高潔亭林，磨水火而堆不毀，經兵革而堆不遷，使達也妙也又能翱翔於堆，窮探力取，以為修業地，非書之善藏而有善讀者歟？第未知達與妙之善讀、讀之善用者何如耳！宋聰道師善讀書，一覽即掛書梁上，人叩，則曰「書貴行，復何讀」，
