藝必貴乎積，積而後化，化而後神。師曠氏之鼓琴也，奏清徵而玄鳥集，奏清角而風雲猝變者，非其精而化、化而神之效若是歟？君子論古樂之人而動物者，必曰琴，而箏笆厓篌有所不預焉，於乎大雅之音無聞也。則知今之樂有精而化、化而神如師曠氏之琴也，獨不動物乎？

松陵陳生彥高，博學多才藝，尤邃於音律。余嘗於三泖水雲之區，聽其鼓十三弦之掭作商聲調，林瀨激發，轉徵音而魚龍悲嘯。緣情而鼓，欲樂則樂，欲悲則悲，故喜者或墮淚，戚者或起舞，所謂藝之動物者非歟？余聞晉謝仁祖喜箏，歌《秋風》一詞，而受遇於桓溫，亟引歸府。生嘗東遊甌越，達官貴人有以溫之引仁祖者引生矣。今且給事漕府，將有祿位於民上矣。籲！非其藝之動物而遇於人者，至是乎？籲！一藝之精尚耳，而況藝之尚於生者乎。因其請言，故為藝說。以其生之遇，而歎儒人遇有不如生者，非藝之罪也，藝之精而至於神者未至於生也。
