伏惟樞密尚書台候，起居萬福。某奔走道塗，疲困已甚，加應答文移，中夕不寐，無暇撰脩謝啓，伏増惶懼。某久在江外，職業無可，惟望廢退，以遂麋鹿之趣，而朝廷過聴，越次寄任，拳拳負荷，不能無憂。今至延安，北入金明，視城壘之役，且欲深見邊事。

戎馬之後，原野蕭條，金明北百里之間，元有塞門、栲栳二寨，并李士彬下蕃部寨二十六所，悉已蕩去，盡沒蕃境，人不敢詣。又此間隨川取路，夾以峻山，暑雨之期，湍走大石，秋冬之流，屈曲如繞，一舍之程，渡涉十數，山川之惡，諸處鮮竝，兵馬出入，所宜慎重。

又將帥無謀，不務訓練，坐困糧道，惟請益兵，兵聚城中，無舍可泊，人馬暴露，時苦寒凛，庫緡空虛，不議營搆，守禦之術，寂寥無聞。張龍圖言累陳乞，只願領郡，求免軍馬之務，諸將何禀焉？某已有奏章，乞别選人，段待制西人所望，無出右者，明鎬亦知邉事，頗見究心，如僉議未諧，即某不敢避，儒士之算，豈能決成？但一方之憂，未有當者，此夙夜切切不得已也。秋霖弗止，禾穂未收，斯民之心，在憂如割，近分擘延安兵馬，作六將教習，由鄜州之始，其於利害，奏牘具焉。某卵翼門下，雖竭心力，常懼貽知己之羞，
