元祐二年四月二十日，翰林學士朝奉郎知制誥蘇軾，同李常、王存、鄧溫伯、孫覺、胡宗愈狀奏。右臣等竊見給事中顧臨，資性方正，學有根本，慷慨中立，無所阿撓。自供職以來，封駁論議，凜然有古人之風，僥幸之流，側目畏憚。近聞除天章閣待制充河北都轉運使，遠去朝廷，眾所嗟惜。方今二聖臨御，肅正紀綱，如臨等輩，正當置之左右，以輔闕遺。或者謂緣黃河輟臨幹治。臨之所學，實有大於治河，治河之才，固有出臨之上者。欲望朝廷別選深知河事者以使河北，且留臨在朝廷，以盡忠亮補益之節。臣等備位侍從，懷有所見，不敢不盡。謹錄奏聞，伏候敕旨。
