八蠟，三代之戲禮也。歲終聚戲，此人情之所不免也，因附以禮義。亦曰：「不徒戲而已矣，祭必有屍，無屍曰『奠』，始死之奠與釋奠是也。」今蠟謂之「祭」，蓋有屍也。貓虎之屍，誰當為之？置鹿與女，誰當為之？非倡優而誰！葛帶榛杖，以喪老物，黃冠草笠，以尊野服，皆戲之道也。子貢觀蠟而不悅，孔子譬之曰：「一張一弛，文、武之道。」蓋為是也。
