夫昔之為文者，非能為之為工，乃不能不為之為工也。山川之有雲，草木之有華實，充滿勃郁，而見於外，夫雖欲無有，其可得耶！自少聞家君之論文，以為古之聖人有所不能自已而作者。故軾與弟轍為文至多，而未嘗敢有作文之意。己亥之歲，侍行適楚，舟中無事，博弈飲酒，非所以為閨門之歡，而山川之秀美，風俗之樸陋，賢人君子之遺跡，與凡耳目之所接者，雜然有觸於中，而發於詠嘆。蓋家君之作與弟轍之文皆在，凡一百篇，謂之《南行集》。將以識一時之事，為他日之所尋繹，且以為得於談笑之間，而非勉強所為之文也。
