史之難其人久矣。魏、晉、宋、齊、梁、隋間，觀其文則亦固當然也。所可怪者，唐三百年，文章非三代兩漢當無敵，史之才宜有如丘明、遷，固輩，而卒無一人可與范曄、陳壽比肩。巢子之書，世稱其詳且博，然多俚辭俳狀，使之紀事，將復甚乎其嘗所譏誚者。唯子餗《例》為差愈。籲！其難而然哉。夫知其難，故思之深，思之深，故有得，因作《史論》三篇。
