李斯上書諫二世，其略曰：「田常為簡公臣，布惠施德，下得百姓，上得群臣，陰取齊國，殺宰予於庭。」是宰予不從田常亂而滅其族。太史公載宰我為臨淄大夫，與田常作亂，以夷其族，孔子恥之。李斯事荀卿，去孔子不遠，宜知其實。蓋傳者妄也。予嘗病太史公言宰我與田常作亂夷其族，使吾先師之門乃有叛臣焉。天下通祀者容叛臣其間，豈非千載不蠲之惑也耶？近令兒子邁考閱舊書，究其所因，則宰我不叛，其驗甚明。太史公固陋承疑，使宰我負冤千載，而吾師與蒙其詬，自茲一洗，亦古今之大快也。
