世俗之患，患在悲樂不以其正，非不以其正，其所取以為正者非也，請借子以明其正。子之失官，有為子悲如子之自悲者乎？有如子之父兄妻子之為子悲者乎？子之所以悲者，惑於得也。父兄妻子之所以悲者，惑於愛也。惟不與於己者，則不惑亦不悲。夫惑則悲，不惑則不悲，人宜以惑者為正歟，抑將以不惑者為正歟？以不惑者為正，則不悲者正也。然子亦有所樂者，曰：吾之所以為吾者，豈以是哉。雖失是，其所以為吾者猶存，則吾猶可樂焉已。而不樂，又從而悲之，則亦不忍夫天下之凡愛我者之悲而不釋夫天下之凡惡我者之喜也。夫愛我而悲，惡我而喜，是知我之粗也。樂其所以為吾者存，是自知之深也。人不以自知之深為正，而以知我之粗者為正，是得為正也歟？故吾願為子言其正。子將終身樂而不悲。《詩》云：「優哉游哉，聊以卒歲。」
