嶺南天氣卑濕，地氣蒸溽，而海南為甚。夏秋之交，物無不腐壞者。人非金石，其何能久。然儋耳頗有老人，年百余歲者，往往而是，八九十者不論也。乃知壽夭無定，習而安之，則冰蠶火鼠，皆可以生。吾嘗湛然無思，寓此覺於物表，使折膠之寒，無所施其冽，流金之暑，無所措其毒，百余歲豈足道哉！彼愚老人者，初不知此特如蠶鼠生於其中，兀然受之而已。一呼之溫，一吸之涼，相續無有間斷，雖長生可也。莊子曰：「天之穿之，日夜無隙，人則固塞其竇。」豈不然哉。九月二十七日，秋霖雨不止，顧視幃帳，有白蟻升余，皆已腐爛，感嘆不已。信手書。時戊寅歲也。
