建州北菀鳳凰山，山如飛鳳下舞之狀。山下有石，聲如銅鐵，作硯至美，如有膚筠然，此殆玉德也。疑其太滑，然至益墨。熙寧五年，國子博士王頤始知以為硯，而求名於余。余名之曰鳳咮，且又戲銘其底云：「坐令龍尾羞牛後。」歙人甚病此言。余嘗使人求硯於歙，歙人云：「何不只使鳳咮石？」卒不得善硯。乃知名者物之累，爭媢之所從出也。或曰：「石不知，惡爭媢也？」余曰：「既不知惡爭媢，則亦不知好美名矣。」
