錢塘有大法師曰辯才，初住上天竺山，以天台法化吳越。吳越人歸之如佛出世，事之如養父母，金帛之施不求而至。居天竺十四年，有利其富者，迫而逐之，師忻然舍去，不以為恨。吳越之人，涕泣而從之者如歸市，天竺之眾分散四去。事聞於朝，明年，俾復其舊。師黽勉而還，如不得已，吳越之人爭出其力以成就廢缺，眾復大集。

無幾何，師告其眾曰：「吾雖未嘗爭也，不幸而立於爭地。久居而不去，使人以己是非彼，非沙門也。天竺之南山，山深而木茂，泉甘而石峻。汝舍我，我將老於是。」言已，策杖而往，以茅竹自覆，聲動吳越。人復致其所有，镵險堙圮，築室而奉之。不期年，而荒榛岩石之間，臺觀飛湧，丹堊炳煥，如天帝釋宮。師自是謝事，不復出入。高郵秦觀太虛，名其所居曰「訥齋」。道潛師參寥告予為記。

予聞之，師始以法教人，叩之必鳴，如千石鐘，來不失時，如滄海潮，故人以「辯」名之。及其退居此山，閉門燕坐，寂嘿終日。葉落根榮，如冬枯木，風止波定，如古澗水，故人以「訥」名之。雖然，此非師之大全也。彼其全者，不大不小，不長不短，不垢不淨，不辯不訥，而又何以名之？雖然，樂其出而高其退，喜其辯而貴其訥，
