鄭之盜，有入樊侯廟刳神像之腹者。既而大風雨雹，近鄭之田麥苗皆死。人咸駭曰：「侯怒為之也。」余謂樊侯本以屠狗立軍功，佐沛公至成皇帝，位為列侯，邑食舞陽，剖符傳封，與漢長久，《禮》所謂有功德於民則祀之者歟！舞陽距鄭既不遠，不漢、楚常苦戰滎陽、京、索間，亦侯平生提戈斬級所立功處，故廟而食之，宜矣。方侯之參乘沛公，事危鴻門，振目一顧，使羽失氣，其勇力足有過人者，故後世言雄武稱樊將軍，宜其聰明正直，有遺靈矣。然當盜之倳刃腹中，獨不能保其心腹腎腸哉？而反貽怒於無罪之民，以騁其恣睢，何哉？豈生能萬人敵，而死不能庇一躬耶！豈其靈不神於禦盜，而反神於平民以駭其耳目邪！風霆雨雹，天之所以震耀威罰有司者，而侯又得以濫用之邪？蓋聞陰陽之氣，怒則薄而為風霆，其不和之甚者凝結而為雹。

方今歲且久旱，伏陰不興，壯陽剛燥，疑有不和而凝結者，豈其適會民之自災也邪？不然，則喑嗚叱吒，使風馳霆擊，則侯之威靈暴矣哉！
