天下之鳴多矣。鏘鏘鳳鳴，雍雍雁鳴，喈喈雞鳴，嘒嘒蟬鳴，呦呦鹿鳴，蕭蕭馬鳴，無不善鳴者，而彼此不能相為，各一其性也。其於詩亦然，鮑、謝自鮑、謝，李、杜自李、杜，歐、蘇自歐、蘇，陳、黃自陳、黃。鮑、謝之不能為李、杜，猶歐、蘇之不能為陳、黃也。吾鄉周君性初，善為詩，署其集曰《自鳴》。予讀之，能知其激揚變動，音節之可愛而已。予亦好吟者，然予能為予之言，使予仿佛性初一語，不可得也。予以予鳴，性初以性初鳴，
