彭叔英以秀才精躔度，推予命謂剛星居多，意若他日可為國家當一面者。巽齋歐陽先生以三命折之，具為之說，與叔英辨予命。叔英既錯下一算，又累先生齒頰。顧區區何足以當之？抑叔英所以許予，謂主命得火，行限得金孛羅計，故至於有主殺伐等語。雖然，此以論項籍、關羽、敖曹、擒虎之流則可，而世固有不必如此而為名將帥者矣，非叔英之所知也。予獨以為陰陽大化，皞縕磅礴，人得之以生，其為性不出乎剛柔，而變化氣質則在學力。如叔英之說某星主剛，某星主柔，得剛者必不能柔，得柔者必不能剛，則是學力全無所施，而一切聽於天命，聖賢論性等書俱可廢已。予性或謂稍剛，殆柳子所謂奇偏者，凜焉朝夕，惟克治矯揉，懼陷於惡，敢以命為一定不易之歸乎？叔英憮然曰：「予言命，君言性命之矣。抑予所以為君言者，自謂不誣。士固各有志，子之志願聞所向。請轉與巽齋直之。」昔諸葛孔明與石廣元、徐元直、孟公威遊學荊州，嘗曰：「卿三人仕進可至郡守、刺史。」三人問其所志，孔明笑而不言。予非孔明也，予之志豈叔英得窺哉！
