吏部為六曹之冠，自前世號為前行，官屬府史由中後行而進者，皆以為榮焉。國朝故事，掾屬之分有左右選，右選之在吏曹者，往往至公卿達官，然不能終更者亦時有之。古人以為吏猶賈然。賈有賢有愚，賢賈之取廉，日計不足，月計有餘；愚賈之求無紀極，舉身以徇貨，反為所累者多矣。此最善喻者。

自風俗之壞，上之人以徒隸遇佐史，甚者先以機詐待之。廉恥之節廢，苟且之心生，頑鈍之習成，實坐於此。夫以天下銓綜之係，與夫公卿達官之所自出，乃今以徒隸自居，身辱而不辭，名敗而不悔，甚矣人之不自重也！
