予既罷內鄉，出居縣東南白鹿原，結茅菊水之上，聚書而讀之。其久也，優柔厭飫，若有所得，以為平生未嘗學，而學於是乎始。乃名所居為新齋；且為賦以自警。其辭曰：

新之為說也，在金曰從革，在木曰從斤。丘陵為山而惡乎畫，履霜堅冰而致於馴。猶之於人，則齊、魯有一再之漸，狂、聖由念否之分。唯夫守一而不變者，不足以語化，化之為神。拊陳跡以自觀，悼吾事之良勤。失壯歲於俯仰，竟四十而無聞。聖謨洋洋，善誨循循。出處語默之所依，性命道德之所存。有三年之至谷，有一日之歸仁。動可以周萬物而濟天下，靜可以崇高節而抗浮雲。曾出此之不知，乃角逐乎空文。倀北轅以適楚，將疇問而知津。掩虛名以自誇，適以增頑而益嚚。我卜我居，於淅之濱。方處陰以休影，思沐德而澡身。蓋嘗論之，生而知，困而學，固等級之不躐；憤則啟，悱則發，亦愚智之所均。齋戒沐浴，惡人可以祀上帝；潔己以進，童子可以游聖門。顧年歲之未暮，豈終老乎凡民？已焉哉！孰糟粕之弗醇？孰土苴之弗真？孰昧爽之弗旦？孰悴槁之弗春？又安知溫故知新與？夫去故之新，他日不為日新、又新、日日新之「新」乎？
