保硯齋者，戈子莊樂奉其先人文甫所藏唐式端研以詒其子棠而以名其齋也。戈子攜其子過余山中，薰沐肅拜，而請為之記。

夫天下之物，人苟愛而玩之，未有不思詒其子孫者也。金谷之池台，平泉之花木，《集古》之金石，悅生之書畫彝鼎，非王公大人不能有，非世為王公大人不能守也。若夫硯，則蓽門竹屋可以藏弆也，破窗損幾可以鋪陳也，韋布之儒生、《兔園》之書冊可以為伴侶也，匹夫孺子可懷褒而藏也，可提挈而走也。是故天下玩好之物，多不能傳之再世，而保硯為易。雖然，硯之為用大矣，九經之文字出焉，天地之情物生焉。傭工記名姓，小儒箋蟲魚，其於硯也，猶無與也。貪夫用以把算子，酷吏用以書獄辭，或媚權而飛章，或乞哀而書表，其為硯之辱，終古不能浣也。必也窮經而好古，澡身而洗心，以磨摐比德焉，以介石比貞焉，其不為硯辱也，斯為能保硯者乎？是故凡玩好之物易於保有，而保硯為尤難。戈子之以保硯名齋也，其將保其易者乎？抑將保其難者乎？文甫之父子，安貧矯志，不失素風，其能保斯硯以詒後人也，亦必有道矣。吾邑繆侃仲素，嘗得述古圓硯，旁刻《西園雅集圖》，出米元章、李伯麟之手，遂以述古名其堂，而黃文獻公為之記。迄今三百餘年，仲素之硯，未知猶在人間否？而其堂之遺址，亦無從問諸荒煙野草之間，獨文獻之文在耳。繇
