古者女子之居室也，必有傅姆師保為陳詩書圖史以訓之。凡左右佩服之儀、內外授受之別，與所以事父母舅姑之道，蓋無所不備也。而又有天子之后妃、諸侯之夫人，躬行於上以率化之。則其居安而有淑順之稱，臨變而有貞特之操者，夫豈偶然哉？

後世此道既廢，女生而處閨闥之中，溺情愛之私，耳不聆箴史之言，目不睹防範之具，由是動逾禮則，而往往自放於邪僻矣。苟於是時而有能以懿節自著者焉，非其生質之美，則亦豈易致哉？史氏之書所以必錄而弗敢略也。

元人受命百有餘年，女婦之能以行聞於朝者有矣，然其繁殆不能盡書。今採其尤卓異者，具載於篇。其間有不忍夫死感慨自殺以從之者，雖或失於過中，然較於苟生受辱，與更適而不知愧者有間矣。故特著之以示勸厲之義云。
