予居白門，四方士多以制義請於予者。然予於制義，實無所知也。苟有所知，則其佳與惡，無敢有隱，必縱心言之。人既以文請於予，則其譽之也必悅，即其規之也亦必不罪。規之必不罪，而吾區區一念私禱穆卜，常願其佳而不願其惡者，何也？彼惡者雖不以吾規之者為罪，然或因吾言而內自沮焉，亦非君子與人為善之意也。

秋浦劉伯宗，少年美才，而有大志。今之人兼此數者，則吾所以悅之之道，利用譽而不利於規。然使其文真可譽，吾亦何必規之以求罪也？伯宗兼此數者，而出之以虛心，不以予無所知，千里外殷勤啟請，至再至三。由是雖規之，諒不予罪。乃伯宗之文，斟酌才法，影略情理，種種佳處，雖欲不譽之而不可得。使予有賞心之樂，而又得免於違心之悔。伯宗惠我已多。嗚呼！
