易曰：「君子多識前言往行，以緒其德。」聖門狂者動稱古之人古之人，夫古之人豈異人哉？以今人不若古人，而始見古人之為高。然今人未嘗不可以為古人也，而不能者，志不狂若也。志之不立終其身汩沒於聲利之場，案頭所置，不離乎朝報仕籍，學彌荒，氣彌俗，究其所究，不過顯膴，舉千秋大業以博區區，亦可惜已。余佩仕優則學之訓，每以暇日觀史，因見宋世風人材，頗類今日，其言論行事，往往有可為今日用者，因采而彙之，蓋吾方寸中，元有古人，如穀之種，木之根，不溉不滋，不培不發。是編，固所以溉之培之之助也。顧余又聞先正論讀書，云讀得一尺，不如行得一寸，夫庖人烹割，而不自飲食，優人唱談竟日，曲本而已，傭書者矻矻筆石間，於書無與也。有如讀書而不能用，遇事臨時，曾不見其得力，與庖人優人傭書何異，余既謝事老矣，然一二尚可勉者，何敢不勉。晉江李廷機序。
