方昭烈之舉義兵，與孔明之出而輔昭烈也，何為者耶？為復劉氏之天下也。夫欲復劉氏之天下，而用武無其地，其將何所措手足？故孔明之語昭烈也曰：「曹操據百萬之眾，挾天子以令諸侯，此不可與爭鋒；孫權據有江東，巳歷三世，此可與為援而不可為圖；荊益二州，土沃而民富，乃用武之國，今其主不能守，此殆天以資將軍也。」彼誠見夫今之天下所可藉以首事者，二子之地而已，而二子之勢又終不能留，而徒以資敵。區區狥


一時之義而失進取之計，不惟無天下之見，果有志于復祖宗之天下者，肯爾為否也？

然則昭烈之取劉璋，為祖宗也，不得於璋而戀戀也；為天下也，不得於一人而戀戀也。昔者伊尹放太甲，先儒謂其欲大忠於商；周公誅管蔡，先儒謂其欲大孝于文王。然則昭烈、孔明固欲盡大忠大孝於劉氏，而厚璋以大義也。

《易大過》之九四有曰：「棟隆吉，有他吝。」四與初正應，而聖人於此則以應之為吝，蓋謂大過之時，不得以常理論。苟吾有以隆其棟，以撑持乎國家，何可復以初累也？知此，則可以語昭烈處璋事矣。

蘇氏之論固不知義，而葉乃區區謂璋得國不義所當取，是亦未為知大義也。儒生俗士不識時務，遂使大人之見不白於天下，予故表而出之。
