予友人績溪程君箕斗，南號桐罔，貢于京，覯予於京師之次，謂予能口，丐予言其號。予曰：「何哉？君取所謂桐岡者，其取《詩卷阿》章語乎？」君曰：「不然。予居有是岡，因託焉。予不知其它。」予曰：「若然，則予烏得而知之？不得而知之，又鳥得而言之？雖然，岡不可知，而義可推也。其有能外《卷阿》者乎？夫鳳之性，非桐不棲，而桐生於岡。桐岡者，天下之所由以棲鳳者也。然有其桐而無鳳者，常也。鳳，靈鳥也，不世出，出則世必治，安得即桐以求鳳也？然無其桐而鳳棲者，未之有也。賢者之於天下也亦然，安有禮未至而賢者寧輕身乎？故詩人以鳳比賢者，而以桐岡比人君待賢者之禮。其言曰：『鳳凰鳴矣，于彼高岡；梧桐生矣，于彼朝陽。』言桐生而後鳳來，禮至而賢者處矣。君以桐岡自託，非以鳳自期者歟？而國家方以貢為君桐，君去是而羽儀於天朝也，不遠矣。君將何所為以章我天朝文明之治，以無愧斯桐也哉？方今聖天子在上，有舜文之德，時雍之化，上迓天休，天下方熙熙然冀一覩來儀鳴岐之盛以為快。君求慚愧於斯岡，吾請側耳以俟朝陽之鳴，而聽其喈喈也已。」
