汪子以抑塞之奇才，閉門十餘年，與古人精神相屬，與天下士氣類相宣。凡一切興廢得失之故，靈蠢喧寂之機，吞吐出沒之數，趨舍避就之情，豪聖仙佛之因，拘放歌哭之變，既已深思而熟詣，出有而入無，確於中而幻於外；然後切之以舟車，證之以人物，廣之以雲水，收之以吟嘯，而歸之以「不主故常」與「無有常家」之兩言。

往與予論詩板橋霜月之中，予乃揚言曰：「詩隨人皆現，才觸情自生：天不以箕笑畢，池不以魴謝鯉。賢者升降於樂府古詩之先，不能者周旋於律絕填詞之下。周旋志衰，升降力薄。夫作詩者一情獨往，萬象俱開，口忽然吟，手忽然書。即手口原聽我胸中之所流，手口不能測；即胸中原聽我手口之所止，胸中不可強。而因以候於造化之毫厘，而或相遇於風水之來去。詩安往哉？」汪子撫予臂大呼曰：「然則子試觀予近詩何如也。」
