白湖孝敬高素，慨風匡物，先哲大儒，居然自待，蒼蒼見於詠歌表章之中，而迫聲成響，迫志成聲，有與先後文人往往而遇者，其可選固無愧，予因而有感也。天下未有器止乎其身，實止乎其名，而得為人所傳者。如制科以來，更三年有一人領楚賢書，其小小者耳，然亦幸而目之為元。元者，苞之道也。非詩古文無以苞製業，非質行無以苞著作，非有一段長林豐草、不欲干進之意，無以苞質行，雖論元者萬萬不及是，而包裹永久之道，則有在於此者。不然，更三年一人焉，至於今不可勝數矣；繇南宮而上，為高官大吏，以赫赫聞於當時者，亦眾矣。數世而後，子孫不能舉其事，井邑不能舉其名，何故哉！故吾於白湖之人之言，有欣述焉。王右丞高人，而失身於鬱輪袍；唐六如韻士，而以雜交致祻——皆非所慕也，況草木腐者乎！
