君子將立言以垂於後，則其與平時之接物者不同。孔子之於陽貨，蓋以大夫之禮待之，而其作《春秋》則書曰盜。又嘗過楚，見昭王，當其問答，自必稱之為王，而作《春秋》則書：「楚子軫卒。」黜其王，削其葬。其從眾而稱之也，不以為阿；其特書而黜之也，不以為亢，此孔子所以為聖之時也。孟子曰：「庸敬在兄，斯須之敬在鄉人。」今子欲以一日之周旋，而施諸久遠之文字，無乃不知《春秋》之義乎？
