《爾雅疏》云：「序者，序述此經之旨也。」隨園先生
論詩之旨，一見於集中《答歸愚宗伯書》，再見於《續詩品》三十二首。凡古人所未道者，業已自道之，無俟再為序述。第按其所編，始弱冠，終花甲，四十年之行藏交際，具在於斯，可當康成《年表》讀矣。晚年境愈高，才愈斂，欲刪去《少年》、《落花》、《殘雪》諸作。起鳳爭曰：「孤松蒼於冬，時花繁於春。各有其時，不可廢也。」先生曰：「諾。」已乃並存之。橫山弟子薛起鳳序
