子厚
自述為文，皆取原於《六經》，甚哉，其自知之不能審也！彼言涉於道，多膚末支離而無所歸宿，且承用諸經字義，尚有未當者。蓋其根源雜出周、秦、漢、魏六朝諸文家，而於諸經，特用為采色聲音之助爾。故凡所作效古而自汩其體者，引喻凡猥者，辭繁而蕪句佻且稚者，記、序、書、說、雜文皆有之，不獨碑、誌仍六朝、初唐餘習也。其雄厲淒清醲鬱之文，世多好者，然辭雖工，尚有町撝，非其至也。惟讀《魯論》、辨諸子、記柳州近治山水諸篇，縱心獨往，一無所依藉，乃信可肩隨退之而嶢然於北宋諸家之上，惜乎其不多見耳。

退之稱子厚文必傳無疑，乃以其久斥之後為斷。然則諸篇，蓋其晚作與？子厚之斥也年長矣，乃能變舊體以進於古。假而其始學時，即知取道之原，而終也天假之年，其所至可量也哉！
