蓉少時，讀書養晦堂之西偏一室。俛而讀，仰而思；思而弗得，輒起，繞室以旋。室有窪徑尺，浸淫日廣，每履之，足苦躓焉。既久而遂安之。
一日，父來室中，顧而笑曰：「一室之不治，何以天下國家為？」命童子取土平之。
後蓉履其地，蹴然以驚，如土忽隆起者；俯視地，坦然則既平矣。已而復然，又久而後安之。
噫！習之中人甚矣哉！足履平地，不與窪適也；及其久而窪者若平。至使久而即乎其故，則反窒焉而不寧。故君子之學貴慎始。
