世人皆悲子胥以忠死，吾獨惜其所以處死者未得也。其諫夫差，語皆闊於事情。使員曰：「吳之於越，非伐國而求其服也。王忘王之使人立於庭，出入呼王而告以先王之痛乎？匹夫含怨，猶必剚刃仇人之胸，況句踐親用戈於先王，傷未及舍而卒？非函句踐之首，以入先王之廟，則臣子之事不終。今力實能誅而縱焉，吾恐先王負恫於九原，而不歆王祀也！」如是，則夫差雖慚忿以殺子胥，而必不釋句踐。句踐死，則越不為沼，而吳亦不至大泯矣。子胥之智非不及
