聖人立制，必有所定，所以防忿争，一統序也。《春秋》之義，立嫡以長，立子以貴。是以言嫡無二也，貴有常也。以弟及兄，則貴有常矣。兄弟之子非一也，不可以為典。雖立其長，猶非正也。且兄弟近而親，所以繼父也；兄弟子疎而卑，所以承亡也：俱非正統。捨親取疎，廢父立子，非順也；以弟繼父，近于義矣。《春秋傳》曰：「太子亡則立母弟，無則立長。」立均以順義，均則卜之道也。
