始瑞新道人治其眾於天童之景德，予知鄞縣，愛其材能，數與之游。後新主此山之四年，予自淮南來視蘇州之積水，卒事，訪焉，則新既死於某月某日矣。人知與不知，莫不愴焉，而予與之又久以深，宜其悲也。夫新之材信奇矣，自放於世外，而人悼惜之如此。彼公卿大夫操治民之勢，而能以利澤加焉，則其生也榮，其死也哀，不亦宜乎。
