衡州《進士題名記》，設於學，耒陽隸焉。去年歷兵火，浸湮毀。耒陽宰郴江王某始與其士刻石邑庠，以自為一同人物記。邦人鬱林教授周君道興介予曰：「縣之立是碑，屬歲大比，將作興士氣也，冀子為之記。」予嘉其勤，不得辭。

按衡進士姓名可考者，自祥符省元鄭向而始，景祐八人俱擢第，郡人侈為渾化，時耒陽居其三。嘉定郡貢十八人，耒陽又半之。間歲往往多得士。今邑人於花州之讖，翹乎其未整也。雖然，科第之末不足為儒者道，天下事固有大於此者矣。衡有石鼓書院，朱文公實為記，其論世俗之書，進取之業，以為志於己者所羞言。至謂學校科舉之害，不可以是為適然而莫之救。先生所以正人心破俗學者，頎乎其志也。前輩之流風未遠，學者之分內何限？屬邑之士其得無所聞乎！然則縣之此碑將以紀姓名也，豈曰使人歆慕誇羨，矻矻然為物外之歸哉？夫在上有師道，則在下有善人修於家；有正學，則天子之庭有真儒。此令尹與凡邑之士，兢兢終日而不能已者也。若夫苟焉而學，泛焉而仕，冒焉而題，則後人指之曰：某也若何！某也若何！嗚呼！是可不凜凜乎哉！
