太史公
紀傳之法，此意固不復講。至司馬溫公受詔纂述《
資治通鑑
》，然後千三百六十二年之事編年繫日，如指諸掌。雖託始於三晉之侯，而追本其原，起於智伯，上系《左氏》之卒章，實相受授。偉哉書乎！自漢以來，未始有也。然一事之首尾或散出於數十百年之間，不相綴屬，讀者病之。今建安袁君機仲乃以暇日作為此書，以便學者。其部居門目、始終離合之間，又皆曲有微意，於以錯綜溫公之書，其亦《國語》之流矣。或乃病其於古無初而區別之外無發明者，顧第弗深考耳。機仲以摹本見寄，熹始得而讀之，為之撫卷太息，因記其後如此，以曉觀者。
