張雄既冠，請字於余。余辱為賓，不可以辭，則字之曰「子谿」。

聞之《老子》云：「知其雄，守其雌，為天下谿。」「常德不離，復歸於嬰兒。」此言人有勝人之德，而操之以不敢勝人之心。德處天下之上，而禮居天下之下，若谿之能受而水歸之也。不失其常德而復歸於嬰兒，人己之勝心不生，則致柔之極矣。

人居天地之間，其才智稍異於人，常有加於愚不肖之心。其才智彌大，其加彌甚，故愚不肖常至於不勝而求反之。天下之爭，始於愚不肖之不勝，是以古之君子有高天下之才智，而退然不敢以有所加，而天下卒莫之勝，則其致柔之極也。然則雄必能守其雌，是謂天下之谿。不能守雌，不能為天下谿，不足以稱雄於天下。
