賢者，人道之成，其有聞於人常也。然而有不盡然者，變也。值其變而無以復其常，茲固若人之不幸；而為之後者不能少加意焉以存其槩於不朽，則若人將何所賴，而後人亦將何所勸以為善，其為不幸尤甚。
予家自六十府君以下，代不乏人，予敢有擇焉。其間但潛德者，聞諸人而人不信，此當付諸天道；惟夫功德有徵而未得食其報者，予無力以振之，而又使其湮測而無聞，豈所能忍哉？因舉其人，摭其事畧，以俟公道之著。
