昔人以《通鑑》為古今大賬簿，斯固然矣。第既有總記之大帳簿，又當有雜記之小賬簿，此歷朝傳志演義諸書，所以不廢於世也。他不具論，即如《隋唐志傳》，創自羅氏，纂輯於林氏，可謂善矣。然始於隋宮剪綵，則前多闕略，厥後鋪綴唐季一二事，又零星不聯屬，觀者猶有義焉。昔有友人曾示予所藏逸史，載隋煬帝、朱貴兒為唐明皇、楊玉環再世因緣，事殊新異可喜，因與商酌，編入本傳，以為一部之始終關目。合之遺文豔史，而始廣其事；極之窮幽仙證，而已竟其局。其間闕略者補之，零星者刪之。更採當時奇趣雅韻之事點染之，匯成一集，頗改舊觀。乃或者曰：再世因緣之說似屬不根。予曰：享雖荒唐，然亦非無因，安知冥冥之中不亦有賬簿，登記此類以待銷算也？然則斯集也，殆亦古今大帳簿之外，小帳簿之中，所不可少之一帙歟！
