之政。其要害重大者莫如九邊，而事之不可臆度者亦莫如九邊。本兵之在朝廷九邊之樞也，其機自職方始。非考驗素定寧無負明時之委任耶！煥不敏承乏是司，竊用懼焉。乃揀集堂稿，慱採邊疏，詢諸邊將譯使有所聞，遂書之冊，積乆編次成書，分類備考。懼夫夷險之弗辨也，于是有彊域考；懼夫防守之弗嚴也，于是有保障考；懼夫將領之弗職也，于是有責任考；懼夫騎射之弗精也，于是有軍馬考；懼夫蒭糒之弗充也，于是有錢糧考；懼夫冦虜之莫知所從來也，于是有外夷考；懼夫籌畫之弗審而無以爲應變之地也，于是有經畧考。各虚其後以俟日有所聞而續集焉，至于通乎九邊者仍撮其要于首，以爲九邊通考，庶平時異地遠者一展卷可知其槩矣。噫！此亦書生之見耳，長于經濟者胡用乎此？
