嘗謂今人纂輯之書，正如今人之鑄錢。古人采銅於山，今人則買舊錢，名之曰廢銅，以充鑄而已。所鑄之錢既已粗惡，而又將古人傳世之寶，舂銼碎散，不存於後，豈不兩失之乎？承問《日知錄》又成幾卷，蓋期之以廢銅。而某自別來一載，早夜誦讀，反復尋究，僅得十餘條，然庶幾采山之銅也。
