西夏，本魏拓跋氏之後，其地則赫連國也。當唐僖宗時，遠祖拓跋思恭爲夏州偏將，以中和元年與太原節度使鄭從讜討黃巢有功，受賜姓曰李。又與河中節度使王重榮、義武軍節度使王處存、鄜延節度使李孝章爲朔方軍節度使，分京城四面都統，拜夏州節度使，世有銀、夏、綏、宥、靜五州之地。

思恭卒，以其弟思諫爲節度使。

自唐末，天下大亂，興元、鳳、翔、邠、寧、鄜、坊、河中、同華諸州之兵，四面並起而交爭，獨靈夏未嘗爲唐患，亦無大功，故其世次功過不顯。

梁開平三年，思諫卒，軍中立其子彝昌爲留後，尋起復正授旄鉞，拜節度使。

明年，其將高宗益作亂，殺彝昌。時有李仁福者，爲藩部指揮使，軍中乃迎仁福立之，不知於思諫爲親疏也。

四年七月，劉知俊攻偪夏州，誘沙陁振武大帥周德威、原帥李繼鸞，合步騎五萬大舉欲俯拾夏臺。仁福兵力俱乏，以急來告，會供奉官
