一九四二年二月十五日，暴寇佔領新加坡後，即將星洲易名為昭南島，其時由新山來星之人，在新山橋頭，每被寇哨兵用巫語問何往，因地名新易，行人往往脫口而出，答以往新加坡，則被饗以巴掌。有時故意詢以往新加坡否？答以是，亦遭撻辱，惟答以往昭南島，方吿無事通過。
（編按）日寇在各個橋頭都設立哨站，初期還在橋上擺放砍下的人頭，以恐嚇市民。哨兵看見不行禮之人，除掌摑外，還以槍托擊打，罰站曬太陽，甚至強迫兩人互相掌摑。
