吳鳳、臺灣阿里山吏也。有俠氣、愛撫人。
蕃俗、祭神馘人首奠之。鳳甚惡之、欲革其弊。時蕃人所蓄首級四十。鳳諭蕃人、毎年供其一、令無新馘。
既經四十年、首級皆盡。蕃人請馘首。鳳懇諭止之、遷延三年。蕃人強請不已。鳳曰、無已則有一焉。明日、日中、冠赤帽被赤衣者、應過此。汝等取其首。明日、赤帽者果至。蕃人躍出殺之。則吳鳳也。蕃人大驚、伏屍而哭、深悔其非、遂建祠、尊爲阿里山神。相誓曰、吾族從今不敢馘首。
吳鳳死而二百餘年。阿里山蕃、獨無害人者、吳鳳之力也。嗟呼亦偉哉。
