元旦，樂人頭戴烏帽，身服畫鶴藍袍，踘躬入門。一人擊細腰鼓，眾人舞蹈，唱祝壽之歌，謂之萬歲樂。昔時西京供奉王宮者，皆大和州人，故稱參河萬歲樂云。

歲朝外自大門內，而中堂以及神廚佛座之前，皆懸葦索一條，名曰司命索。其長短，視門桁之廣狹，而精徑約一二寸。兩端稍殺截齊，一端作龍首尾形，以禾穗編排垂掛，若回鬚，然長尺許。黏白色紙數條，雜以龍蝦、橙橘、松柏、竹葉等類。又有結於大門外之門松上者，亦稱門綏。按《荊楚歲時記》曰：“正月貼畫雞於戶，懸葦索於其上。”又《熙朝樂事》曰：“正月朔日，插芝麻梗於簷頭，謂之節節高。”蓋日本風俗無不權輿於中國也。和歌氏云：“此事日本所在皆有，但司命二字甚新奇。”東京人呼シソナヮ，譯言避邪索之意，蓋懸之以防疫鬼來耳。
