劉福通迎韓山童之子韓林兒為帝，號稱「小明王」，尊韓山童妻楊氏為皇太后，立國號為宋，定都亳州，建元龍鳳，軍稱紅巾軍。劉福通為樞密院平章、丞相，旋發動三路北伐。
舊曆五月，紅巾軍郭子興病卒，其子郭天敘率部投小明王韓林兒，天敘為濠州都元帥，同右副元帥朱元璋南渡長江打江南。
舊曆九月，郭天敘偕舅張天祐等部攻集慶路，為大元義兵元帥陳埜先所殺。
