橫溪匯聚於此，沖積成三角洲，因而名之。日人取其諧音，改名三峽

本區處臺北盆地之西南，東臨新店、
烏來，南界桃園復興，西連大溪，北接鶯歌、
樹林、
土城
；全區山陵分佈，南高北低，西北一隅大漢溪之畔，有河谷平原。
